6 Tips on How to Manage Sleeping Outside Home

Traveling or going out with a baby can be a wonderful way to make memories, but it also presents unique challenges, especially when it comes to sleep. Whether you’re visiting family, attending an event, or simply enjoying a day out, maintaining your baby’s sleep routine is key to ensuring they (and you) stay happy and rested. Here are some practical tips to help you navigate sleeping outside the home.

Here are 6 tips that could help you manage sleep while out of the house, always remember, each child is different and every child will need a specific setup that works for them and helps them sleep.

1 | Plan Ahead

Before heading out, consider where your baby will sleep. Options might include a travel crib, stroller, car seat (for short naps only), or even a quiet corner with a blanket. Familiarity is crucial, so bring items that remind your baby of their usual sleep environment, such as a favorite blanket, sleep sack, or white noise machine. Always keep an eye on the baby for safety purposes.

2 | Time Your Outing with Naps

If your outing coincides with your baby’s naptime, aim to leave the house right before their nap. The motion of the car or stroller can help lull them to sleep. Ensure they’re dressed comfortably and appropriately for the weather.

3 | Manage Noise and Overstimulation

If you’re in a noisy or overstimulating environment, such as a restaurant or party, create a calm space for your baby. If they can’t fall asleep amidst the commotion, take them for a stroller walk away from the noise. Overstimulating environments can make it harder for babies to settle, so try a mini wind-down routine: step into a quiet room, dim the lights, and spend a few minutes rocking or singing softly.

4 | Create a Sleep-Friendly Space at Grandparents’ Home

If you’re at a relative’s home, especially grandparents’, designate a specific room for naps and bedtime. Bring your baby’s usual bedtime items and stick to a version of your regular routine. Even a few minutes of quiet time in a familiar setup can help your baby settle more easily.

5 | Prepare for Late Nights

If you’re planning to stay out past your baby’s bedtime, consider an evening power nap. A short nap in the early evening can prevent your baby from becoming overtired. This could be in the car on the way to your destination or in a stroller while you’re out.

Or if your baby will sleep outside on the regular bedtime, so when it’s time to go home, try to have a slow and quiet transition to your baby’s room with the support of white noise and a feed if needed.

6 | Wind Down Before Bedtime

When you get home late, your baby might need a little help transitioning from the excitement of the day to their bedtime. Use a shortened version of their regular bedtime routine: a quick diaper change, pajamas, and a few calming minutes in a dim room. If your baby falls asleep in the car on the way home, consider transferring them to their crib or letting them finish their nap in the car seat (if supervised).

By planning ahead and being adaptable, you can enjoy outings without sacrificing your baby’s sleep. With the right strategies, you’ll help your little one feel secure and rested no matter where you are.
